Abandoned Toyota Land Cruiser covered in moss, stuck in muddy forest beside stone wall

The Stuck Toyota Land Cruiser

Along an abandoned road in the mountains of the Boso Peninsula, where time seems suspended, rests a Toyota Land Cruiser Cygnus, a rare model of the famous Lexus LX470, designed exclusively for the Japanese market. This isn’t an ordinary abandoned car, but a true “haikyo-car,” a relic that nature is gradually weaving into its scenery, transforming this vehicle into a living painting, half-mechanical, half-vegetable.

A Forgotten Story in the Shadow of the Tunnel

Covered with moss and surrounded by dense vegetation, this Land Cruiser is a strange marriage of machine and nature, frozen like a memory swallowed by the assaults of the climate. But why was such a car left here, without licence plates, half-buried and forgotten? According to rumour, it was stolen more than fifteen years ago and abandoned in this remote corner. Perhaps it bears witness to a mysterious story which, like the dark tunnel nearby, escapes our understanding.

Reaching this place is not without its challenges. The road, strewn with rockfalls and overrun by roots, leads to the Mishima Tunnel, an old pedestrian passage, dark and narrow. Rather than approaching by a more direct path, I went around the mountain, taking hours before finally walking through the tunnel in the dark, accompanied only by the sound of my footsteps and the echo of the wind. This long, almost unreal detour added a dimension to the experience, making the discovery of the Land Cruiser Cygnus, with its sacred bearing and wild charm, all the more striking.

Explorers of Time and Rust

Haikyo enthusiasts like me are drawn to such curiosities, fascinated by the idea that each trace tells an unfinished story. On my first visit, this metal giant appeared under the flickering light of my phone, like an apparition, after that crossing of the tunnel where the world seemed to fade away.

When Nature Takes Control

Here, nature is everywhere, ravenous, almost hostile. In summer, other visitors inhabit these damp woods: wild boars and leeches, which never hesitate to attack careless explorers. Better to bring something to repel these unexpected companions! Over the years, moss, ferns, and mushrooms have invaded the bodywork of the 4×4, slipping into every corner. Cracks in the windshield bear witness to the relentless damp of the forest. The seats and steering wheel, gnawed by time, now seem to merge with the surrounding moss. As if nature has adopted it, granting it a new life, far from its original functions. Yet beneath this vegetation, a trace of its glorious past remains, as if at any moment, it could start up again.

Each visit reveals a change: a denser fern, a mushroom on the dashboard. This Cygnus, frozen and yet alive, becomes a work of art in perpetual evolution, illustrating the beauty of abandonment in this slow fusion between human and nature. There, on this forgotten road, it seems to wait, a silent witness to impermanence, defying time and nature with an implacable calm.

The beauty of abandoned things often lies in their subtle merging with their environment. What is called “abandoned cars” here has become a genre in its own right, celebrated for its fragile aesthetic. Traces of human activity blend with nature, which hastens to cover every proof of passage, creating a fascinating balance between humanity and earth.
