An Ascent Into the Unknown

Reaching Shishi Gongen is no walk in the park. Forget the simple stroll on a paved trail—this is a true expedition. Along the way, you traverse paths overgrown with vegetation, occasionally getting scratched by unruly branches and treacherous roots. And then there’s that moment when you come face to face with a rusty chain dangling from a dizzying cliff.

“Seriously?”, you murmur, a mix of excitement and apprehension. Because yes, to access this sanctuary, you have to climb a 50-meter rock wall with the help of this chain. A dramatic ascent that can deter more than a few visitors in flip-flops (you get the idea). By the way, a piece of advice: equip yourself with sturdy shoes and a good dose of boldness. Those who don’t feel like mountaineers would do well to turn back.

Skulls and Prayers

After braving the rocks and the dizzying heights, Shishi Gongen finally reveals itself, like a well-kept secret. The first things that strike you? The bones. Everywhere. Boar and deer skulls, lined up with macabre precision, cover the ground and stack up along the walls, forming sinister paths leading to two small hokora, those miniature shrines. Quite the thrill.

Why so many skulls, you might ask? It’s a practice that is over 800 years old. Local hunters, to honor the spirit of the mountain and ensure a safe and successful hunt, would leave the heads of their prey as offerings. Imagine the atmosphere: a place where prayers are made of bones and where each skull tells a story, sometimes with a date engraved directly into the bone, marking the day a hunter honored his part of the ritual.

A Sanctuary Suspended in Time

This sanctuary is a plunge into an ancient tradition where mysticism and the instinct for survival coexist. **It is like a snapshot in time, a period when man and nature coexisted without artifice.** The piles of bones are a tribute to the harshness of mountain life, a reminder that nature, as majestic as it may be, can be cruelly beautiful.

The walls of the cavities housing the hokora are covered with a thin layer of moss, creating a striking contrast between the vibrant green and the white of the skulls. This unexpected combination gives the impression that the sanctuary breathes, that each gust of wind whispers the tales of displaced souls and forgotten prayers.

Venture, But Not Too Much

For those who dream of exploring Shishi Gongen, be aware that the experience is intense and not without risk. The ascent requires strength and concentration, and even though the view upon arrival is spectacular, humility remains essential. This sanctuary, so primitive and visceral, seems to have defied the centuries, like an impassive guardian, a silent witness to the sacred exchanges between man and the mountain.
