Fukiware Falls in Japan, river rushing through curved rock gorge amid autumn forest.

Fukiware Falls: The Echoes of Water

At the heart of the mountains of Gunma, Fukiware Falls transports you to a spectacular setting. Far from the crowds, it’s the perfect place for a nature break where the water seems to amuse itself by carving its path through the rock. A real visual punch, as if time had stopped just for you!

Nicknamed the “Niagara of Japan,” Fukiware Falls is 7 metres tall and 30 metres wide. Its name comes from the Japanese word ware, meaning “crack,” because of the way the water seems to force its way through the rock. The result? A waterfall as hypnotic as it is spectacular, where the water plunges into a deep crack, releasing a refreshing mist, perfect for a summer break.

The trails around the falls, easily accessible despite some slippery sections after rain, offer several unique viewpoints. The main path leads to fascinating perspectives on this waterfall, which seems to sculpt its bed in an almost artistic way. And if you’re attentive, you might spot one or two snakes, stretching out lazily in the water, indifferent to your presence. Don’t worry, they just add a little thrill to this already immersive experience!

Thrill-seekers can venture onto the suspension bridge offering a sweeping view over the entire falls area. And honestly, the experience is genuinely impressive!

A fascinating detail: Fukiware Falls, carved by the erosion of basalt rock, is in perpetual motion. The water flowing with such force eats away about seven centimetres of rock each year, slowly but surely changing the landscape. It’s a true living masterpiece, evolving with the seasons and years. In short, Fukiware Falls doesn’t do things by halves!

Just ten minutes away by bus is Oigami Onsen, a thermal spa nestled in the mountains. The legend says that a giant snake god pierced the earth to let a hot spring gush forth, giving birth to this onsen. A fun wink to our snake encounters near the falls, isn’t it? Each spring, a giant snake festival celebrates this legend, with a snake-shaped portable shrine parading through the onsen town. After all, what could be better than relaxing in legendary waters after a day juggling waterfalls and snakes?

Whether you’re after adventure or relaxation, Fukiware Falls and its surroundings have something to win you over. Between wild nature, local legends, and moments of rest, the place offers a unique atmosphere where tranquility and a sense of being somewhere else blend together.
