Japan is home to many abandoned sites, among them a place that continues to draw the interest of explorers: New Muroto Sky Rest. This former panoramic restaurant on Cape Muroto, in the south of Shikoku island, opened in 1972 before closing only six years later. As a witness to dreams and unfinished projects, it now offers a unique experience to anyone venturing there.

Architecture that defies oblivion
Imagine a building that looks like a futuristic fortress: three huge pillars rise at the corners of a triangleas a tribute to a bygone age. These structures, so much more than decorative, contain spiral staircases that invite curious visitors to climb towards the unknown.

Hard to believe that this venue, once intended for weddings and meals overlooking the vast Pacific, was built in such a secluded place that even GPS is reluctant to pinpoint it. Easy enough to understand why this architectural aspiration has been forgotten so quickly.
Visit the innards of the past
Venturing into New Muroto Sky Rest is like reading a storybook backwards. From the entrance, remains of “Welcome” signs set the tone. On the ground floor, once-animated rooms now resonate with silence. The walls seem to whisper tales of a bygone era.

My favourite moment? Climbing the famous spiral steps. The view from the top is breathtaking: a 360° ocean horizon. But traces of the past are still there, with ruined floors and pools of water marking the wear and tear of time.
Phantoms or frissons ?
Local legends add an extra layer to the mysterious aura of Sky Rest as home to paranormal phenomena. Visitors are said to have seen henro-rei, pilgrim spirits in white robes. One story, amplified by ghost hunter clips and DVDs, ensures that the site is one of the most haunted in Shikoku. Frissons guaranteed!

Cat pause at the summit
After such explorations, a moment of sweetness awaits lucky visitors to the heights of Cape Muroto: a colony of cats 🐱 thrives here, transforming the parking lot into a paradise for feline fanciers. These cats, protected and fed by the locals, welcome you with cheerful meows. A heart-warming encounter after the cold and mysterious atmosphere of Sky Rest.

The ephemeral in the face of eternity
New Muroto Sky Rest embodies this fascinating paradox: a human attempt at immortality, corroded by nature and time. Yet while it stands it will continue to captivate, inspire and fascinate those who dare to challenge such isolation.
