Ever heard of the nemophila of Yabakei? If the name doesn’t ring a bell, now’s the chance to discover a corner of Japan that lights up each spring. This usually unobtrusive region has been transformed by an ambitious local project, turning its landscapes breathtaking shades of blue.

Sea of baby blue eyes
Imagine yourself in mid-spring, cherry trees shedding their last petals and parks decorating themselves in a different colour. In Yabakei Gorge, at Nakatsu on the southeastern edge of Fukuoka prefecture, a phenomenon comes to life every year between mid-April and early May: a carpet of blue nemophila along the banks of the Yamakuni River. And when I say “carpet”, I’m not talking about a few shy nemophila vying for attention, but hundreds of thousands of small flowers in baby blue.

This all started in 2012, when local residents planned to boost their region by betting on the blue colour. And the bet has won: Insignis Blue nemophila settle down and transform the landscape with their incredible brilliance. Their ultra-photogenic aspect attracts crowds, to the point that more places are taking them up every year. It’s crazy to see how small flowers, almost invisible and unknown, can stir up such enthusiasm in Japan!
Blue Cave: a magical sight

Visitors flock to contemplate what is known here as the “Blue Cave”, a field of nemophiles where the blue seems to float and reflect the heavens. The air is filled with wondering whispers and camera clicks – after all, who could resist the urge to capture this sea of flowers? Although unassuming on their own, the nemophila reveal an unforgettable beauty en masse.

Sensual experience
But not only the sight of them is amazing. Here all senses are alert. Zenkaichaya, a local corner shop, offers the famous Nemophila Soft, an ice-cream dessert as light as the spring breeze, tinged with delicate blue in tribute to the flowers all around. The taste is said to be reminiscent of the sky … up to you to find such a poetic touch!

Escape along the gorges
The cliffs of Yabakei stand majestically, carved over the centuries and lined with greenery. A cycle path, “Maple Road”, runs along the gorges and river for 35 km to Nakatsu station. This scenic trail is perfect for admiring the beautiful colours of a Japanese spring.

Yabakei Gorge, with its natural beauty and enchanting setting, can appeal to many people. So if you have the chance to spend time in the region during Golden Week, don’t miss this blue-tinged getaway. Come on, out with the walking shoes, be patient on the sometimes crowded road, and go explore these panoramas where nemophila cover the ground and seem to bring the sky down to our level …
