Among the Groves of Takayama

Half day for the old town (Sanmachi) and Miyagawa River stroll; 1–2 days if using Takayama as a base for nearby trips (e.g., Shirakawa-go, Okuhida, Gero, or the Nakasendo towns like Tsumago/Magome).

In the late 1800s, prisoners were sent to Abashiri to build their own jail and open up northern Japan with chains, picks and snow. Today it's a museum. The mood has stayed.
