Vermilion torii gate path descending hillside at Ukiha Inari Shrine, Japan

Ukiha Inari Shrine

There are places in Japan that grab you instantly, and Ukiha Inari Shrine is one of them. Picture a silent mountain, flaming vermilion torii aligned in a hypnotic climb, and a view from the summit that leaves you speechless. That is exactly what I found climbing the 130 metres of elevation that make up this hidden shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture. ⛩️

A climb beneath the torii

From the first steps, you sense that you are gradually leaving the ordinary world. Here, no city buzz, no compact crowd, just silence, wind, and the bright red of the torii. There are 91 gates lining the climb, forming a nearly unreal tunnel that seems to rise toward the sky. With each torii crossed, the feeling of entering another universe intensifies, like an initiation ritual leading toward a sacred place. And one of the real pleasures of Ukiha Inari is the quiet. Little visited by tourists, the shrine offers a bubble out of time where you can move at your own pace and immerse yourself fully in the place.

A shrine of many blessings

Ukiha Inari is not content with offering an enchanting setting; it is also a place of prayer and hope. Dedicated to a multitude of deities, it attracts visitors seeking prosperity in business, abundant harvests, health, or longevity. And it’s easy to get caught up by hanging an ema, a small wooden plaque on which each person writes their wish before hanging it among hundreds of others.

A breathtaking reward

And finally, the ultimate reward: the view. After the effort, you discover a magnificent panorama over the city of Ukiha and its rice paddies stretching as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can even glimpse the Harazuru hot springs, nestled in the distance toward Amagi.

Spring: bonus season with cherry blossoms

If you have the chance to come in spring, it’s yet another face of the shrine that opens to you. Cherry blossoms add a touch of tender pink to the vermilion torii and turn the place into a fairy-tale scene. The petals falling gently along the path heighten that surreal impression.

A (nearly) secret jewel

Ukiha Inari is still a relatively preserved treasure from mass tourism. It’s a place that has to be earned, a climb to savour, an experience you don’t forget. Climbing a mountain beneath a tunnel of vermilion torii, accompanied only by the rustle of the wind and the crunch of stones underfoot… what more could you ask for?
