Imagine yourself floating above a sea of clouds early in the morning, the rising sun tinting the horizon with pastel shades. This is just what Unkai Terrace observation deck offers, perched at 1,088 metres at Hoshino Resorts Tomamuon the island of Hokkaido. ☁️
Unkai Terrace: sky decking
Unkai Terrace, literally meaning “terrace of the sea of clouds”, offers a breathtaking view of a rare and ephemeral natural phenomenon: unkai. This display is caused by specific weather conditions, creating a dense cloud expanse below and giving the impression of walking on the clouds.

A cloud-shaped walkway
While there I had the chance to try the “Cloud Walk”, a cloud-shaped walkway that overhangs the void and offers a unique feeling of strolling above the clouds. The structure, designed to mimic the shape of clouds, gives total immersion in this dreamlike landscape.

Relaxation and contemplation
For those who prefer a more relaxing experience, Unkai Terrace offers several facilities:
- Cloud Pool: a vast hammock-shaped structure about 10 metres square, where you can lie and let yourself be rocked by the panoramic view.
- Contour Bench: a 117-metre bench inspired by the contours of the terrain, providing ideal space for contemplation.
- Cloud Bed: a relaxation area 15 metres long, fitted with elastic cushions developed by interior design brand “sixinch” to resemble the “seeds” of the original cloud formations.
- Cloud Bar: a bar with a stunning view, where you can enjoy a drink while admiring the scenery.

A capricious phenomenon

Remember that the appearance of unkai depends on specific weather conditions. The chances of observing this phenomenon are about one in five, which adds a bit of mystery and excitement to the experience. So best consult the weather forecast before planning your visit.
Morning adventure
The best chance of catching unkai is early in the morning. The gondolas usually run from 5am to 7am, depending on the season. So you have to rise early and I also suggest that you dress warmly, because the temperatures can be pretty cool, even in summer.

A prized destination
Since opening in 2006, Unkai Terrace has attracted a growing number of visitors –
over 600,000 in 2024. The crowds reflect the irresistible appeal of this unique experience, which combines the natural beauty of Hokkaido with innovative facilities to create an unforgettable adventure..

Whether you’re looking for a truly original experience in Japan, alone or with friends or family, Unkai Terrace in Hokkaido is a destination not to be missed. Whether you’re more of a thrill seeker or enjoy serenity, walking above the clouds is an adventure that doesn’t happen every day. You will literally fly … without having to take a plane this time!
